Welcome to The Snowball. My name is Kenny, I am a third-year Business Management undergraduate at the Singapore Management University (SMU), majoring in Finance Analytics. I am truly excited to share with you what The Snowball is all about.
What is The Snowball?
The Snowball is an investment research website. Our mission is to democratize world-class investment research. Our vision is to bring actionable insights and ideas to investors globally.
Why "The Snowball"?
One of the books that had a profound impact on my life was "THE SNOWBALL: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life" by Alice Schroeder. In the book, Warren Buffet remarked: "Life is like a snowball. The important thing is finding wet snow and a really long hill". What Warren Buffett essentially meant was, in order to achieve success in life, start small and put in consistent effort over a long period of time. I have applied this framework in my personal life and have seen amazing results. Hence, I hope that through consistent small steps, we can build The Snowball into something beautiful.
How do you navigate The Snowball?
The website consists of two sections, snowball | blog and snowball | investment research. The former section discusses broader investment-related topics such as personal finance, portfolio management, and market commentary. In addition, the section also serves as a journal for the personal investment portfolio. The latter section focuses on company, industry, and thematic research particularly in the United States, Hong Kong, and Singapore markets.
Who will be publishing articles and how frequent will it be?
I am very grateful to have Bryan and Jin Koi onboard The Snowball. They are both amazing and brilliant people with investment acumen. I firmly believe they have immense value to provide to readers of The Snowball.
At the moment, with just the three of us, we are looking at a minimum frequency of monthly articles. It is a deliberate choice to choose quality over quantity. However, the eventual goal is to publish weekly articles once we grow the snowball | team. If you share the same passion for investing as us and would like to be a part of the team, feel free to reach out to us!
In the meantime, do subscribe to The Snowball to keep updated with our latest articles. The subscriber form is at the end of this article.
Why am I doing this?
To answer this question, we need to step back in time to late 2015. While we were still serving our National Service, my friend (Aloysius) and I decided to co-found an equity research website focusing on small-to-mid-cap stocks listed in Singapore. What initially meant to be a side hobby to pass time turned into something beyond our expectations.
Through our work at the website, numerous opportunities opened up for us. For example, we were invited to invitation-only analyst briefings for Singapore-listed companies where we had the opportunity to interact with the company's key management face to face. We also got the opportunity to network with numerous stakeholders in the equity research industry in Singapore such as corporate communications firms, sell-side analysts, buy-side firms, stockbrokers, and journalists.
As a result of my work at the website, I was able to secure three investment research internships during my summer and winter holidays. The first two were sell-side equity research internships at Maybank Kim Eng and UOB Kay Hian. The last one was a buy-side investment research internship at Auric Pacific Group.
While the website was eventually decommissioned in December 2019 after prolonged inactivity by both of us, there is no doubt that we benefitted tremendously from our experiences.
As such, it is my hope that The Snowball will be the phoenix that rises from the ashes of the previous site and emerges stronger and be much more sustainable. Having benefitted so much from writing about investing, I also hope to provide a platform for aspiring investment writers/analysts to hone and showcase their craft to the world.
We are just picking up from where we left off. Boy am I excited for the future.
Keep on snowballing,
